Yemen, officially the Republic of Yemen, is a country in Western Asia, occupying the southern end of the Arabian Peninsula. It is bordered by Saudi Arabia to the north, Oman to the northeast, and the Red Sea to the west, the Gulf of Aden and Arabian Sea to the south. Yemen is separated from Djibouti and Eritrea by the Bab-el-Mandeb Strait at the southwestern tip of the Arabian Peninsula.
Yemen has a long and rich history, dating back to the ancient kingdom of Saba. It was a major center of trade and commerce in the ancient world, and was known for its production of frankincense and myrrh. In the 7th century, Yemen became part of the Islamic Caliphate, and later came under the rule of various Muslim dynasties. In the 16th century, Yemen was occupied by the Portuguese, but was eventually liberated by the Ottoman Empire. Yemen remained part of the Ottoman Empire until the early 20th century, when it became a British protectorate. In 1967, Yemen gained independence from Britain and became a republic.
