Introduction: Timor-Leste, officially the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, is a sovereign state located in Southeast Asia. It occupies the eastern half of the island of Timor, the small islands of Atauro and Jaco, and Oecusse, an exclave on the northwestern coast of West Timor. Timor-Leste is bordered by Indonesia to the west and south, and shares maritime borders with Australia to the south and Papua New Guinea to the east.
Timor-Leste has a population of approximately 1.3 million people, making it one of the least populous countries in Asia. The majority of the population lives in rural areas, and the capital, Dili, is the only major city. The official languages of Timor-Leste are Tetum and Portuguese, although Indonesian and English are also widely spoken.
Timor-Leste gained independence from Portugal in 1975, but was invaded and occupied by Indonesia from 1976 to 1999. During this period, the country suffered severe human rights abuses and economic stagnation. In 1999, a UN-sponsored referendum resulted in a vote for independence, and Timor-Leste became a fully independent state in 2002.
Since independence, Timor-Leste has made significant progress in rebuilding its economy and infrastructure. However, the country still faces a number of challenges, including poverty, unemployment, and political instability.
