Introduction:
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are a remote and uninhabited group of islands located in the southern Indian Ocean. They lie about 4,100 kilometers (2,500 miles) southwest of Perth, Australia, and are part of the Australian Antarctic Territory.
The islands were discovered in 1833 by Captain Peter Kemp of the American sealing ship Mentor. Kemp named Heard Island after Captain John Heard, who had sighted it a few months earlier. McDonald Islands was named after Lieutenant William McDonald, who was part of Kemp's crew.
Heard Island is the largest of the group, with an area of 368 square kilometers (142 square miles). It is a volcanic island with a rugged coastline and several active volcanoes. McDonald Islands is a group of smaller islands located about 40 kilometers (25 miles) east of Heard Island.
The islands are home to a variety of wildlife, including penguins, seals, and seabirds. They are also home to the endemic Heard Island shag, which is found nowhere else in the world.
Heard Island and McDonald Islands are a designated World Heritage Site. They are managed by the Australian Antarctic Division, which conducts scientific research on the islands.
