Introduction:
The Marshall Islands, officially the Republic of the Marshall Islands, is an island nation located in the Pacific Ocean, about halfway between Hawaii and Australia. It consists of 29 coral atolls and five isolated islands, with a total land area of approximately 181 square kilometers (70 square miles). The country has a population of around 59,000 people.
The Marshall Islands has a rich cultural history, dating back to the early Polynesian migrations. The first Europeans to arrive in the islands were Spanish explorers in the 16th century. In the 19th century, the islands were claimed by the German Empire and became part of German New Guinea. After World War I, the islands were transferred to the control of Japan. During World War II, the Marshall Islands were the site of heavy fighting between American and Japanese forces.
After the war, the Marshall Islands became part of the United States-administered Trust Territory of the Pacific Islands. In 1979, the islands gained independence as the Republic of the Marshall Islands. The country has a close relationship with the United States, with which it has a Compact of Free Association.
The Marshall Islands is a developing country, with a GDP per capita of around $4,000. The country's economy is heavily dependent on fishing and tourism. The Marshall Islands is also a member of the United Nations and the Pacific Islands Forum.
