Introduction:
Burkina Faso, formerly known as Upper Volta, is a landlocked country in West Africa. It covers an area of 274,200 square kilometers (105,870 square miles) and has a population of over 20 million people. Burkina Faso is bordered by Mali to the northwest, Niger to the northeast, Benin to the southeast, Togo and Ghana to the south, and Côte d'Ivoire to the southwest.
The country's name, Burkina Faso, means "land of upright people" in the Mossi language. The Mossi people are the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso, accounting for about half of the population. Other major ethnic groups include the Fulani, Gurunsi, and Bobo.
Burkina Faso is a predominantly Muslim country, with about 60% of the population adhering to Islam. Christianity is the second largest religion, with about 25% of the population being Christian. The remaining 15% of the population practices traditional African religions.
Burkina Faso is a poor country, with a GDP per capita of just over $2,000. The economy is primarily based on agriculture, with cotton being the main cash crop. Other important sectors of the economy include livestock, mining, and tourism.
Burkina Faso has a relatively stable political system, with a multi-party democracy. The country has been ruled by a series of military coups since its independence from France in 1960. The current president, Roch Marc Christian Kaboré, was elected in 2015.
