Introduction:
The Republic of Cabo Verde, or Cape Verde, is an archipelago consisting of ten islands and five islets located in the Atlantic Ocean, around 350 miles (570 kilometers) off the coast of West Africa. The islands are divided into two main groups: the Barlavento Islands in the north and the Sotavento Islands in the south. The largest and most populous island is Santiago, which is also the location of the capital city of Praia.
Cape Verde gained independence from Portugal in 1975. The country has a population of around 550,000 people and is a member of the African Union, the Community of Portuguese Language Countries, and the Economic Community of West African States. The official language of Cape Verde is Portuguese, but Cape Verdean Creole is the most widely spoken language. The country's economy is based on tourism, fishing, and agriculture.
