Introduction:
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), officially the Democratic Republic of the Congo, is a country in Central Africa. Formerly known as Zaire, the DRC is the second-largest country in Africa by area, after Algeria, and the 11th largest in the world. It is bordered by the Central African Republic and South Sudan to the north, Uganda, Rwanda, and Burundi to the east, Zambia and Angola to the south, and the Republic of the Congo and the Atlantic Ocean to the west. The Democratic Republic of Congo has an estimated population of 86.8 million and is the most populous officially Francophone country in the world. Over 200 ethnic groups inhabit the country, the most populous of which are the Kongo people, the Luba people, and the Twa people.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is rich in natural resources, including diamonds, copper, cobalt, gold, tantalum, and niobium. However, the country has been plagued by political instability and armed conflict since its independence from Belgium in 1960. The First Congo War (1996-1997) and the Second Congo War (1998-2003) were particularly devastating, resulting in the deaths of millions of people. The country has been plagued by ongoing violence and human rights abuses since the end of the Second Congo War.
The Democratic Republic of Congo is a member of the African Union, the United Nations, and the Francophonie.
