Brief Description:
São Tomé and Príncipe is a small island nation located in the Gulf of Guinea, off the northwestern coast of Africa. It is the second-smallest country in Africa, both by land area and population. The country consists of two main islands, São Tomé and Príncipe, and several smaller islets. The capital, São Tomé, is located on the northeastern coast of São Tomé Island.
São Tomé and Príncipe was uninhabited until the 15th century when it was discovered by Portuguese explorers. The islands were then colonized by Portugal and used as plantations for sugar, cocoa, and coffee. São Tomé and Príncipe gained independence from Portugal in 1975.
Today, São Tomé and Príncipe is a developing country with a small, largely rural economy. The main industries are agriculture, fishing, and tourism. The country is also home to a rich biodiversity, including many endemic plants and animals.
