Introduction:
Zambia, officially the Republic of Zambia, is a landlocked country in Southern Africa. It is bordered by the Democratic Republic of the Congo to the north, Tanzania to the northeast, Malawi to the east, Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Botswana, and Namibia to the south, and Angola to the west. With an area of 752,614 square kilometers (290,585 square miles), Zambia is the 39th-largest country in the world by land area and the 7th-largest in Africa. The country has a population of over 18 million people, with the majority living in rural areas.
Zambia gained independence from the United Kingdom in 1964 and has been a member of the Commonwealth of Nations ever since. The country has a multi-party political system and a president who is both head of state and head of government. The official language of Zambia is English, but Bemba, Nyanja, Tonga, and other indigenous languages are also spoken.
Zambia's economy is largely based on mining, particularly copper, which accounts for over 70% of the country's exports. Other important industries include agriculture, tourism, and manufacturing. Zambia is also a member of the African Union, the Southern African Development Community (SADC), and the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA).
