Introduction:
Ecuador, officially the Republic of Ecuador, is a country located in northwest South America, bordered by Colombia to the north, Peru to the east and south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west. It is the second smallest sovereign state in South America after Uruguay, with an area of 283,561 square kilometers (109,484 square miles). Ecuador includes the Galápagos Islands, an archipelago in the Pacific Ocean about 1,000 kilometers (621 miles) west of the mainland.
Ecuador is a multi-ethnic and multicultural nation, with a population of over 17 million people. The predominant ethnic group is Mestizo, a mix of Spanish and indigenous ancestry. Other significant ethnic groups include indigenous peoples, Afro-Ecuadorians, and European descendants. The official language of Ecuador is Spanish, but several indigenous languages are also spoken.
The capital of Ecuador is Quito, located in the northern highlands of the country. Quito is the highest capital city in the world, situated at an altitude of 2,850 meters (9,350 feet) above sea level. Other major cities in Ecuador include Guayaquil, Cuenca, and Ambato.
Ecuador has a diverse geography, ranging from the snow-capped Andes Mountains in the interior to the tropical rainforests of the Amazon Basin in the east. The country is also home to several volcanoes, including Cotopaxi, one of the most active volcanoes in the world. The Galápagos Islands are a unique ecosystem, renowned for their endemic species, such as the giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and flightless cormorants.
